Nipple soreness and wounds are a common problem during lactation, especially in the first weeks after birth. These is-sues are associated with an increased risk of mastitis, poor weight gain in the newborn, formula supplementation, and premature cessation of breastfeeding. Prevention and early diagnosis are fundamental tasks for medical staff caring for both the mother and infant. The most common cause is the baby latching onto the breast too shallowly.

The current state of care for patients with hard-to-heal wounds poses serious challenges for the healthcare system. Although there are no relevant statistics, it is estimated that up to one million Poles suffer from chronic wounds, which have enormous health, social, and economic consequences. Arterial or venous leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers and cancer ulcers, surgical site infections and complications of healing after surgery are the main types of wounds responsible for the enormous physical and mental suffering of patients.

For a long time, the issue of treating wounds, both acute and chronic, was considered primarily in terms of the physical healing process. Recently, however, the complexity of the processes involved in tissue regeneration, as well as the significant influence of the human psyche on the overall wound healing process, has been increasingly taken into account. The patient’s mental state is influenced by factors related to the occurrence of the injury, as well as the presence of changes in the skin, which is considered one of the largest organs in the human body

The risk of developing a foot ulcer in a diabetic patient is 30%. The long duration of the ulcer, its traumatic etiology, significant depth of the wound and ischemia of the lower limbs promote infection. Infection of the wound in 60% of cases precedes amputation of the limb, and infections may affect up to 80% of patients with foot ulcers. Amputations affect the quality of life due to the lack of acceptance of one’s appearance and disability. Care for a patient with a chronic wound should be provided by qualified personnel in a systematic and planned manner, also in the home environment. The paper attempts to draw attention to the systematic assessment of the wound condition and intensive nursing care, which allows for a quick response and adap-tation of the therapeutic procedure to the current clinical condition and reduces the need for amputation.
