Wound management is a huge field which is expanding exponentially and there are many stakeholders from different specialties involving multidisciplinary teams dedicated to healing hard to heal wounds with minimal or no complications with the proper standard of care. Many new modalities such as biotherapy, adjunct therapies, new advanced dressing, solutions and others are frequently introduced globally.
The last issue of “Leczenie Ran | Polish Journal Wound Management” in 2023, which is being handed over to you today, concludes an excellent change for our journal. The year 2023 was marked by a change of publisher, the introduction of new (including international) members of the Scientific Council, and the decision to publish our journal in an English-language version. The increasing prevalence of diabetes poses a heightened risk of vascular complications in the lower limbs. The costs associated with wound management are substantial, accounting for approximately 1-3% of total healthcare expenditures in developed countries. Implementing and maintaining preventative, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive care have become prioritized objectives for scientific societies.
A tissue bank is a highly specialised laboratory whose task is to obtain and process biological material according to established procedures and store and distribute allogenic tissue grafts to healthcare facilities. Tissue grafts find their application in regenerative medicine, such as treating extensive and deep burns and chronic wounds. This review discusses the role of tissue banks in accessing allogenic human skin grafts and the problem of demand and scarcity of allogenic human skin in Poland.
An ulceration is a secondary lesion resulting from a pathological process. It is a type of skin damage extending deep into the dermis. Many aetiological factors for ulcer formation can be distinguished. Half of them are considered to occur in the course of chronic venous insufficiency. Patients with leg ulcers comprise a significant proportion of patients hospitalised in dermatology departments.
Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is a topical therapy for difficult-to-heal (chronic) wounds, recognised by scientific societies and healthcare system organisations in many countries for its contribution to the wound healing process. Maggot debridement therapy has been increasingly used in Poland for over a decade, both in outpatient and inpatient settings.
By issuing this document, the Polish Wound Management Association supports the use of this method by physicians and nurses licensed to treat wounds, subject to separate regulations. With a view to continually improving the quality of wound management in Poland, the Association recognises the need to standardise the principles of this therapy.
Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain a major complication of diabetes, affecting approximately 18.6 million people worldwide each year. As outlined in the comprehensive JAMA review by Tze Woei Tan, Andrew Boulton, Sicco Bus and myself, DFUs lead to high rates of hospitalization, amputation, and death. Several recent advances provide hope for improved prevention and treatment of these debilitating wounds. Epidemiological studies have further delineated the disproportionate burden of DFUs and amputations among minorities and those of lower socioeconomic status. For example, long-term rates of major amputation were nearly 3-fold higher in Black vs. White Medicare beneficiaries in the United States. Efforts to address such disparities must remain a priority globally.
The current issue of “Leczenie Ran | Polish Journal of Wound Management” is an exciting publication with interesting articles, not only from our country. The editorial was written by Prof. D.G. Armstrong, highlighting numerous advances in diagnosing and treating diabetic foot and emerging new directions in this field. Please read this short article and reach out to the original paper published in JAMA in the first half of this year. On June 15-17 this year, Kazimierz Dolny took place Scientific and Training Conference of the Polish Wound Management Association under the motto “Together we create the history of wound treatment in Poland”. There are numerous lecture sessions and workshops for this time, all in terms of daily practice. Specialists practising various medical professions met to discuss the treatment of hard-to-heal wounds.
Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive method that enables remote and non-contact assessment of temperature distribution on the surface of the body. In the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds, it allows accurate tracking of the thermoregulatory process in the limb or the whole body along with mapping the body surface temperature.
